    Mission Statement:
    Our mission at Santa Rosa Middle School is to foster an appreciation for diversity, to support the varied learning styles and abilities of all students as they work to achieve district standards, and to guide them in developing lifelong habits for success.

    Special Programs:
  • After school tutoring is provided to any students who would like help with homework and/or to improve skills. Targeted assistance is provided to students who need support in the areas of language arts and mathematics. Our after school tutoring is currently available from 3:15 - 4:15 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Students may sign up in the counseling office.
  • Academic Literacy and Academic Numeracy are support classes offered in addition to a student's regular math or English classes to provide support to students whose performance is below grade level.
  • Pre, post and ongoing assessment programs will keep track of students progress in developing their academic skills and will be used as one criteria in developing support and intervention plans for those students at risk. Grades and teacher and parent recommendations will also be used in developing these plans.
  • Study Skills Curriculum Program is well designed to assist students with organization, time management, research strategies, test taking, etc.
  • Parent Support and Education Program Parent support and educational programs are designed to assist parents in successfully supporting their student's academic success and to support parents in understanding teen issues. Parents are invited to participate in our very active Parent Faculty Student Organization, which meets monthly. All parents are encouraged to attend. Regular English Learners Advisory Council meetings are scheduled throughout the school year to provide support and assistance to families learning English as a second language.
  • Santa Rosa High School Peer Counseling/Tutoring Program places High School students in the classroom assisting students with their academic work.
  • Sheltered Science and English/History Core Classes: Limited English Proficient (LEP) students have the opportunity to take sheltered classes, which are designed to make subject matter more understandable and accessible to students who are learning English as a second language. The goal is to provide access to Core curriculum through sheltered teaching strategies, which may include visual demonstrations, key vocabulary development, hands-on learning experiences, and other instructional strategies. Our goal is to support students with English language acquisition, while supporting their access to academic content in core classes.
  • English Language Development (ELD): The ELD (English Language Development) program includes intensive instruction in the English language for students whose native language is not English. Students are taught the skills of understanding, speaking, reading and writing English. Bilingual instructional assistants help the students with their academic course work while they are developing their English skills. The students participate in activities in which they experience positive adjustment to life in a multicultural society. A community worker provides assistance with school related problems and communication with nonEnglish speaking parents. Students progress from non-English speaking at the beginning of the program to near native proficiency by its end. An Individual Learning Program (ILP) is developed for each student by the ELD teachers.
  • Resource Specialist Program (RSP): The Resource Specialist Program provides an individualized educational program to students with average abilities who are functioning significantly below grade level. Speciaily trained teachers work with pupils individually or in small groups with materials geared to the students' needs. Students the CORE curriculum, either in the are exposed to resource room or in the regular classroom, with special education staff working in collaboration with the regular education teacher. Resource Specialist Programs are federally funded and are a result of Public Law 94-142, informally known as "Education for all Handicapped Children Act of 1975.
  • Special Day Class (SDC): This program services students who are developmentally delayed. The goal is that each student will perform at optimum level; hence, an environment favorable to motivation, learning and adequate self-concept is created in order to teach each student to be a responsible and productive citizen of the future. Our primary purpose is to integrate the fundamental academic skills, social skills, life skills, vocational skills, and recreational skills into a curriculum that will result in independent living. The students are in the Special Day Class for 3 to 5 periods each day depending on their ability level. During the rest of the day they are mainstreamed into different areas of curriculum which include: art, choir, living experience, P.E. and lunch. There is cooperation and regular communication between the regular class teachers and the Special Day Class teacher to check on the mainstreamed students.
  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program (DHH): Specially trained teachers of the deaf work with students in small groups utilizing materials to meet the individual needs of each student. Resource classes provide support for deaf and hard of hearing students so that they can be successful in regular education. This program allows deaf and hard of hearing students to feel a sense of belonging to both the regular education and the deaf community.

    History:
    Elsie Allen High School is located in the most culturally diverse section of Santa Rosa. It opened in the Fall of 1994 with a focus on technology and the arts. Elsie Allen(1899-1990), the school's namesake, was a fourth generation Pomo Indian basket weaver and native of Santa Rosa. She is known world wide for her beautiful basketry, and was an educator and artist who taught weaving techniques and led groups on the gathering and preparation of basket materials. She was a tribal scholar and consultant on Southern Pomo culture and language. Her legacy is a wonderful model for all of us.

    Santa Rosa High School is steeped in tradition. We were the 9th high school chartered in California, and this community's only public high school from 1874 until 1958. The campus has a picturesque "Ivy League" look with separate classroom buildings and much of the open space in lawn or plantings. Santa Rosa High School is Sonoma County's high school of choice, with 50% of its present student body comprised of students who come from outside the schools attendance boundaries.

    Santa Rosa High School is a truly a comprehensive high school, with offerings in Agriculture, Automotive Technologies, Business, CAD Drafting, Electronics, and Wood Shop . The school has established career pathways and higher learning institution partnerships.

    Santa Rosa High School is an academic leader, having had for nine consecutive years the district's highest SAT scores. Santa Rosa High School has a high API rating of 696. On campus tutoring is available through an arrangement with Sonoma State University.

    Our core academic program is composed of rigorous courses in English, math, science, social studies, foreign language and physical education. Foreign languages offered are Spanish, French and Latin. Advanced placement is available in Spanish, French, English, Art, calculus, biology, chemistry, physics, economics and U.S. History. Honors credit is offered in English (Freshmen, Sophomore and Junior), biology, chemistry, physics, government, world history, Spanish, French, geometry and algebra. Physical education, required for graduation, emphasizes fitness and healthy living.

    Santa Rosa High School is home of the renowned ArtQuest program. This district supported program, with specialty course work in Visual Fine Arts, Dance, Drama, Instrumental and Vocal Music, and Multimedia / Video was recently awarded the prestigious Jack London Award for Educational Excellence.
